Local student teacher Vianni Ward was awarded a Kupe Scholarship at a ceremony in Wellington on Tuesday.
“We want to inspire and support talented people into the teaching profession. Kupe Scholarships do just that by recognising outstanding Māori and Pasifika student teachers,” Barbara Kuriger said.
“In Otorohanga I am proud to see Vianni Ward has been given a scholarship which will help her with course fees and a study allowance.”
The scholarships also offer professional mentoring and recruitment support after graduation.
Thirty outstanding Māori and Pasifika student teachers in early childhood, primary and secondary education were awarded scholarships. They all have strong track records of academic success.
“National has an unrelenting focus on raising achievement for young New Zealanders. That means supporting our current teachers, and fostering our next generations of teachers, to all be the best role models they can be.
“We want them to inspire the children in their classrooms to help them reach their potential and achieve the best results they can,” Kuriger said.
